AI and Education: Opportunities and Challenges

AI offers personalized learning experiences, but its integration raises concerns regarding mental health, social development, and equity. Saviesa emphasizes that while AI can enhance learning, it must prioritize mental health literacy and social-emotional learning (SEL) to protect student well-being.
Research, such as the 2021 Lancet study, has highlighted the risks of unregulated AI, including addictive behaviours fostered by social media algorithms. Saviesa promotes a responsible approach to AI, one that combines academic achievement with emotional resilience and mental health literacy.

Why Mental Health Literacy and SEL Matter

Mental health literacy is vital in today’s digital landscape. Teaching students to understand and manage mental health challenges equips them with essential life skills. This aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 4 (Quality Education). Additionally, SEL fosters critical skills like empathy and emotional regulation, helping students thrive both personally and professionally.

Saviesa’s Approach: Human and AI Integration

At Saviesa, we advocate for a balanced integration of human skills and technology. AI should support human development rather than replace it. By leveraging AI in  educational settings—through tools like virtual and augmented reality and personalized learning paths—we can foster curiosity and engagement, ensuring inclusivity and ethical practices.
In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, it is not enough for students to excel academically; they must also possess strong social-emotional skills to navigate complex personal and professional environments. Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) focuses on critical life skills such as empathy, emotional regulation, resilience, and collaboration, which are vital in preparing students for an AI-driven world. These skills help students understand and manage their emotions, build positive relationships, and make responsible decisions, all of which are essential for personal well-being and success in the 21st century.

At Saviesa, we believe that integrating SEL with AI-driven education is crucial for preparing future generations to thrive in a technology-enhanced world. While AI can personalize learning paths and improve academic outcomes, it is SEL that nurtures the human capacities needed to succeed in an increasingly automated society. By using AI tools like virtual reality simulations and personalized feedback systems, Saviesa seeks to create learning environments where students can develop emotional intelligence and resilience alongside academic knowledge.

By embedding SEL into AI-enhanced educational tools, we aim to address the growing mental health crisis among youth, exacerbated by excessive screen time and social media. This combination ensures that technology enhances human development rather than replaces it, fostering well-rounded, emotionally resilient individuals who can succeed in both personal and professional spheres.
